May 3, 2018

Waterford CT: This weekend the Budweiser Blastoff kicks off at the New-London Waterford Speedbowl as planed as the fast shoreline oval comes alive. Hosting 15 divisions with some big money on the line with added support and contingency money and the SK Mod prize to win is a generous $3,000!! (updated 5pm Thur from the original $2,600) With lots of anticipation and nice spring weather predicted for the racing at arguably one of the raciest tracks in the country everyone is ready go for the 68th year in a row. The Speedbowl is a very fast mid banked 3/8th of a mile with 2 very distinct groves, most nights they provides consistent 2 and 3 wide racing for many laps at a time. The Speedbowl is known for its hard nose, fast racing where drivers have to be "up on the wheel" the whole time.  It is known to separate the men from the boys and it tends to have every division put on great shows all through the program as this is not common at many tracks.

Friday will be practice from 1Pm to 5PM and the grandstands are free to watch. Saturday pits open at 8AM with rotating practice practice at 9:15 and MRS tour mods will practice at 11:15. followed by the last rotating practice. Heats start around 2PM with all divisions qualifying SAT. Speedbowl divisions race heats for points.  It always adds to the excitement and makes for entertaining heat races as well. Saturday features are as follows, Bandoleros (20), NEMA Midgets (25),TQ Midgets (25),  NEMA lites (25), VMRS (100), Pro 4 Modifieds (25),  Super X-Cars (25), X-Cars (25).

Headlining the weekend for touring divisions will be the Valenti Modified Racing Series on Saturday night for 100 laps. Mike Holdridge, Keith Rocco, Jeff Malave, Todd Patnode, Rowan Pennink, Woody Pitkat, Jacob Perry, Ron Silk, Anthony Nocella, Sam Rameau, Mike Willis, Russ Hersey, and Richard Savary are just some of the names expected to contend for the checkered flag on Saturday night.

Also making his MRS debut is Veron CT's Brett "The Jet" Gonyaw in the Gaston GRE#6. Gonyaw is no stranger to Mods or the Bowl as he has been running a SK lite all around New England with success. What some do not know  is Gonyaw has run SK and Tour Type mods before on a limited bases and should pick up the MRS car pretty fast. Also expected to run NEMA is Whelen Modified Tour driver of the Starrett #89 Matt Swanson and CT's 2018 3 track SK mod champion Keith Rocco.

On the Sunday card of the Bud Blastoff, it all starts with a pit party at 11am, where fans can meet their favorite drivers in person and get hero card autographs before all the action kicks off.  Features start at 1PM with the Legends (25), Trucks (25) Mini Stocks (25) SK Lights (25), Limited Sportsman (30), Late Models (30) will run the show on Sunday. The SK Modifieds will run 80 laps to close and headline Sundays show. It should be a GREAT race with $3,000 now going to the winner. It is a who’s-who in terms of who will take down the win and with that kind of money up for grabs it will be interesting to see who will show up to take a chance at it and put on a show. Also new this year is the Limited Sportsman (Street Stock type) race is raised to 30 laps. This division is a favorite of many goers of the Speedbowl as they tend to put on some of the best racing any where from any division.

Located in New London County on CT's shoreline at 1080 Hartford Turnpike Waterford, its just one of the many attractions in the area and one of the favorites with plenty of parking and free RV camping in designated areas. It is a family destination weekly on Saturday nights, we encourage everyone to grab  friends or family and come check it out for yourselves. The 2 day Blastoff weekend pass is a very fair $30.00 both days for adults in the stands, ages 13-16 $10 and under 13 is free. Pits are $40 for the weekend pass and youth are welcome in the pits as well. For a detail schedule of events click HERE.
